Keurbooms Beach, Plettenberg Bay 6600, South Africa
Plettenberg Bay is one of the most popular resort towns on the South African coastline. In the December summer holidays the town is teeming with holiday makers from all over the country as well as visitors from abroad. The beautiful stretches of beach with the spectacular backdrop of mountains leaves an impression with everyone. This protected bay is not only popular with human mammals; those that live in the ocean love it just as much. There are seven different marine mammals that visit the bay. That really is an impressive amount and marine specialists worldwide visit Plettenberg Bay to experience its wonders. The seven marine mammals are Bottlenose Dolphin, Common Dolphin, Humpback Dolphin, Cape Fur Seals, Brydes Whales, Humpback Whales and the giant Southern Right Whales. Although some of the whales are spotted all year round the Southern Right Whales use the protection of the bay to mate and give birth to calves which they nurture in the bay until they are ready for their long journey. Some of the mammals can be spotted from the shore for example the Bottlenose and Humpback Dolphins as well as the Southern Right Whales. Occasionally a humpback and Brydes whale can be seen in the distance. The seals can be spotted when you hike the beautiful Robberg Nature Reserve with its ancient midden cave and spectacular scenery. The reserve also has a wonderful variety of Fynbos and birdlife to enjoy. While hiking you can view the seals down below and if you are lucky a Great White shark looking for a seal snack! A very special experience is to view these mammals on one of the dolphin and whale watching sea safaris. My favourite sighting from the boats is the Common Dolphin which is not often encountered; but just so exciting to have thousands of dolphins swimming along with the boat and riding the wake that the boat creates. Often they are in the middle of a feeding frenzy and as a bonus you have Brydes Whales and sea birds in the mix as well – truly spectacular!
Plettenberg Bay is therefore a treat for nature lovers with a fantastic marine environment, beautiful beach and lovely surrounding forest you are spoilt for choice. During the whale season you will find excellent winter specials. Plett Villas is an owner run and managed villa and apartment holiday rental agent in Plett.
